A force feedback yoke can greatly enhance your flight simulation experience by providing realistic physical sensations that mimic those in a real airplane. In an actual aircraft, when you turn the yoke or fly through turbulence, you feel resistance and pressure changes that inform you about the plane's behavior. This tactile feedback is crucial for making precise adjustments and truly understanding how the aircraft responds to your inputs.
One of the most significant advantages of a force feedback yoke is how it simulates the process of trimming the airplane. In real flying, when you're climbing after takeoff—for example, maintaining a speed of 70 knots in a Cessna 172—you have to pull back on the yoke to keep the nose up. As you adjust the trim, you feel the pressure on the yoke gradually easing. Once properly trimmed, you can release the yoke, and it stays in that position, keeping the plane steady without additional input. The yoke doesn't spring back to a center position; the trim holds it where it needs to be.
In contrast, most standard flight simulator yokes use simple springs that always pull the yoke back to the center when you release it. This means you don't feel any change when you adjust the trim, making it harder to know if you've trimmed the aircraft correctly. You have to watch your instruments closely or let go of the yoke to see if the plane starts to climb or descend, which isn't how it works in real flying.
By using a force feedback yoke, you feel the actual forces on the controls as you would in a real airplane. This means when you trim the aircraft, you feel the pressure decrease, and the yoke stays in place when you let go, just like it should.
